Your business success = bookkeeper + accountant + Xero = dream team
Will bookkeeping become a thing of the past? Do you even need a bookkeeper?
As a business owner – you need to ‘do the books’. It is unavoidable.
You have to pay tax, perhaps GST and of course you aim to make profit.
Some businesses will seek out the assistance of a bookkeeper to assist in these tasks.
We live in a world of delegation, outsourcing and subcontracting out what we do not want to do in our lives. So, given we agree bookkeeping has to be done, and perhaps we do not want to do it ourselves, bookkeeping will never die. Right? Wrong.
Bookkeeping is becoming a new profession with disruption at it's heart.
Ok – little disclaimer here – I am a passionate qualified bookkeeper and I own and run a bookkeeping practice.
Automation and self service have already radically changed bookkeeping as we used to know it. I don't really feel the description of bookkeeper describes what we do.
I sat and listened to Mark Bouris (of ‘The Apprentice’, ‘The Mentor’, the ‘home loans bloke’) speak at a Conference recently. His biggest message was ….
Know what business you are in
When he owned a successful Home Loans business he was trying to sell to Kerry Packer, Kerry asked him "Son, what business are you in?"
Mark Bouris replied "I sell Home loans " Feeling like it was a somewhat easy question.
Kerry responded - "No you are not - you son, are in the business of peoples' hopes and dreams'."
I am NOT in the business of bookkeeping. I am in the business of CHANGE development.
Part – only part, of how I do this for business owners - is keeping an awesome set of books. But that’s only part of it.
I connect business owners with great software and awesome accountants.
The passion I have for clean, compliant numbers, drives a result to the business – not only of compliance but also of analysis.
The team at KRS Consulting Group is able to assist business owners make decisions that avoid loss and drive profit.
Now I want you to think about your accountant
Picture them in your mind.
How do they intersect with a bookkeeper? Why do you need both? Didn’t we just predict that bookkeeping is maybe dead?
A bookkeeper who works with an accountant in a clear tangible relationship adds value to the business. They ensure there is no duplication of effort. They protect the numbers. Together they help you leverage the numbers. As an owner this drives your purpose. You went into business for a reason – there was a purpose.
Then comes great software. What does that look like ? Hint : it is BLUE.
A great accountant and bookkeeper team will ensure you have the BEST in breed software running the numbers. Not all software is equal. What we are seeing increasingly this year is that the businesses running Xero as their accounting package, utilising a bookkeeper to train and set up processes and drive compliance – then connecting with a great accountant for financial and tax planning are ahead of the game. They know where their business is performing well and where there are opportunities for improvement. More importantly – they are up to date so they can action strategies and make changes ahead of their competitors.
Bookkeeping has changed remarkably whilst I have been in the ‘game’ and it is becoming a new industry - together with innovation offered from Xero and in forming great partnerships with progressive accounting practices – we are a DREAM team !
